Student housing grouped around a courtyard in the setting of a listed building.
A scheme designed for student housing in Exeter where buildings are grouped around a courtyard in the setting of a listed building. The heavily used pedestrian spaces were structured to provide direct routes to buildings along with smaller paths through gardens and grassed quads in a collegiate style. Covered cycle storage, limited parking spaces and strongly planted building margins were also part of the setting.
Construction materials for the external works include free-draining gravel for the majority of the paths, with more formal, paved approaches to the halls of residence. The planting scheme included both the intensity of ornamental plants around the building frontages, trees and structure planting at the site margins and large, open lawns for students’ use in the summer months.
