Town regeneration by major employer
The Radstock Cooperative Society has been in operation for 150 years, most recently running a chain of supermarkets across Somerset. With the Radstock shop no longer fit for purpose, the retailer proposed building a new store and head office, funded by apartments, retail and housing on the same large plot. It sits on a central but busy junction at the heart of the town’s Conservation Area, so needed a strong edge, but also respite from the traffic. This was created by large walled planters with rows of trees to take up the level changes, while incorporating a ramp up to the new square which would be used for markets and events.
