Opportunities for healthy play
The school was rebuilt to replace an existing primary school on the site and to improve the outdoor play options for pupils of all ages. The site also housed a children’s centre and public library so needed careful organisation to maintain child protection measures.
Outside, the formerly barren, sloping site was terraced using timber retaining walls. The youngest children had an enclosed play area directly outside their classrooms, while the older children enjoyed a netted ball games area at the next level and a tree-topped grassy mound at the top of the site. NT worked closely with the school to provide an imaginative and stimulating environment.
