Commercial Road | Portsmouth

A robust paving scheme with both natural and man-made materials.

Following on from our work on the Northern Quarter, the practice was asked to help with the design and refurbishment of the Commercial Road in Portsmouth. This was originally a collaboration between Novell Tullett and the city’s landscape architects, but as the project stages progressed the practice took on full responsibility for the detailed design.

The street has been refocused around a series of tramlines, with integrated lighting, which echoes the old tram route throughout the commercial heart of the city. Edinburgh Road and Commercial Road have been pedestrianized with a new performance space where the streets meet. The redesigned marketplace frames the performance space, which has a bespoke canopy and seating areas.

A robust paving scheme with both natural and man-made materials, new trees, and street furniture has completed the refurbishment of the street.
